Rent or Buy

Whether to buy or rent a home is a decision unique to each person or family. Here are some things to consider when weighing options for both.

1

Location

Contact a local realtor to help you determine which area is best suited for your family’s move. Most cities are built like a tree trunk with the oldest homes in the middle and newest homes on the outer areas.

2

Budget

Budgeting to either rent or buy is typically based on your BAH and/or your desired monthly payment.

3

Why Rent?

Many people feel that renting is the easier option the easier option for them because military life is hard. When renting, be prepared to have long wait times to stay on base and to pay rent higher than your BAH in many areas of town. Also, most rentals have pet restrictions so if you have more than two pets, purchasing might be a better option.

4

Why Buy?

Home ownership during your time in the military can be a catapult into financial prosperity. You can select a preferred location and bring along your pets without concern. It also allows you to take pride in ownership and creativity, all while reaping the tax benefits and is also an investment when you leave.
